C2 Cream-on-Cream
This is an incredible project that almost
never happened. In 2004, I was able to acquire a small group of 'weird'
crested geckos from another breeder. The geckos arrived and indeed, several were
weird. A couple were so attractive and unlike anything I had ever seen,
that I knew I had to make more like them...but at the same time, I 'knew'
it would take at least 2-3 generations to actually see results. At that
time, I didn't have many females to choose from, so I chose a couple projects to
pursue and shelved a few of the others.Fast forward to the summer of 2006. I had this incredibly
different male that I'd been housing by himself for almost two years and I
finally decided that I had to at least try breeding him. Remember, it was
two years later. I had produced over a thousand more geckos by that time
and this one gecko was still weird to me...still unlike anything I had ever
seen. He sported a solid cream dorsal pattern, pure cream colored
harlequin markings on top of a glowing cream colored base flecked with rust
colored dashes and dots and all of this was complimented by a number of black
dalmatian spots. I didn't know how I'd make more of him, but I knew I had
to try.
I then carefully selected the three
females that I thought would best suit this project. The females I chose were
unusually pale in color, offspring from another project I had pursued and since
given up on. I knew I didn't have anything like the male, but I had some females
growing up from my creamsicle project that developed a very pale appearance
instead of the orange I had been after. These would turn out to be the
perfect females to start this project.
As it turns out, this project became
a huge success story almost overnight (that's about a year in the selective
breeding world). The glowing coloration that I mentioned before turned out to be
a trait that is passed on from parent to offspring with an unusual degree of
consistency. |
