Carpet Pythons - Breeding Season
2008
This year was really light because of our
facility move in March. The move itself didn't do it, but when we moved
into the new facility, we decided to try keeping the ambient temperature around
78-80F. What I learned is this; Crested geckos reproduce like mice
at those ambient temperatures and female carpets (at least ones early on in the
follicular development process) do just the opposite. All in all, I'm not
as disappointed as you might think because it looks like I'm going to produce at
least three times as many geckos as last year, so a mellow year for carpets
actually provides a much needed break in terms of work and in terms of buying
new caging.
FYI: If you were wondering,
excessive heat early on in the reproductive process (when snakes should still be
cooling) will cause females to re-absorb the follicles. Of course, Irian
Jayas are always first to produce for me, so I did get really lucky on a few of
those.
